External Links: The 1970 BCS is a continuing, multi-disciplinary longitudinal panel study of just under 17,200 babies born in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland between 5 and 11 April 1970. Formerly known as the British Births Survey (BBS), the study initially aimed to look at the social and biological characteristics of mothers in relation to neonatal morbidity, and to compare the results with those of the 1958 National Child Development Survey (NCDS). Since the 1970 survey there have been six full data collection exercises, and the survey has broadened in order to monitor, review and evaluate the cohort members' health, education, social and economic development. Data from the original and follow-up surveys can be downloaded from the UK Data Archive at the University of Essex. Visit: http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/findingData/bcsTitles.asp
