Datasets: European Social Survey (ESS)

Funded jointly by the European Commission, the European Science Foundation and academic funding bodies in each participating country, the ESS is a biennial multi-country survey. Objectives include measuring and explaining trends in attitudes, beliefs and values across countries in Europe by interviewing a random sample of 2,500 people over 15 years of age (1,500 minimum) in each participating country. Now entering its third round (the first and second rounds were fielded in 2002/2003 and 2004/2005 respectively), 25 countries have so far been confirmed. The questionnaire includes two main sections: a 'core' module which aims to monitor change and continuity in a wide range of social variables, and two or more 'rotating' modules which have focused upon issues such as immigration and asylum, and economic morality.
