Datasets: Family Expenditure Survey (FES)

The FES is a continuous survey, carried out by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), of a random sample of household expenditure and income which has been in existence since 1957. Annual samples of around 10,000 households (about 1 in 2000 of all United Kingdom households) are selected each year. The main purpose of the survey is to provide the weights for the United Kingdom Retail Price Index (RPI), but it is also an invaluable source of economic and social data for the Government and other research agencies. The data are available annually from 1961-1963 and from 1968-2000. From April 2001 onwards the data continues to be collected in the Expenditure and Food Survey (EFS), formed by combining the FES with the National Food Survey (NFS).
