There have been numerous studies of the socio-economic-political lives of the BMEs in their various aspects, from qualitative audit studies to small scale studies to national sample surveys. The availability of the ethnicity categories in the 1991 and 2001 Censuses, particularly the release of the Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs) from the two censuses, has prompted, and will continue to prompt, a huge research programme on the BMEs by the academic community and the government researchers. However, none of the existing research has systematically studied the socio-economic-political experiences of the first and the second generation BMEs in comparison with the white charter population. This research intends to pool all the major national representative surveys from the early 1970s to the latest available (1971-2004) to differentiate and standardise, as far as possible, the first and the second generation of the BMEs, and key variables on employment status, class, education, earnings from paid work, religion and political orientations and support. After that, we shall conduct a theoretically informed and methodologically rigorous research to compare the experiences of the BMEs both among themselves and between them and the white charter population, to examine the effects of anti-discrimination laws, to assess the extent of ‘ethnic penalties’ and the degree of ethnic integration, particularly by the second generation, and to test the validity of competing theories on ethnic disadvantages.
