Abstract:

Previous research into cultural consumption has been based on survey data.Whilst this is the only way to find out about cultural consumption across all parts of the population and in all genres, there are drawbacks to this approach. On the one hand there are some problems with respondents misrepresenting their behaviour due to the socially loaded nature of culture, and on the other the data lacks detail regarding the kind of event that they attended (commercial, subsidized, in a city centre or local venue, high-brow or popular) and their behaviour surrounding it (how much did they pay? How far did they travel? How many people attended with them? How many different venues did they attend?).

This project involves the secondary analysis of large-scale databases relating to consumption of the performing arts, made up of administrative data collected when tickets are sold. It will primarily look at data collected by performing arts organizations in London, but will also make comparisons with databases in other regions. It will combine this data with census and other publicly-available datasets, and use multivariate and latent class analysis to answer questions including: what are the best geodemographic and socio-economic predictors of arts attendance? Do these vary by region, artform, location of venue, "high art" vs populist work, or the number/diversity of performances available in a local region? Has this changed over time? Do some geodemographic classifications give better discrimination than others when analysing arts attendees?
