Abstract:

Whilst social scientists have paid considerable attention to the distribution of the population of ethnic groups across the country and research relating to ethnic concentration and segregation in metropolitan Britain has been widely reported, much less investigation has been undertaken into the movement patterns of ethnic sub-populations between origins and destinations within Britain or the links between patterns and processes of internal ethnic migration with those of demographic change and international migration.

This project focuses on the redistribution of Britain’s ethnic sub-populations through internal migration at a number of different spatial scales. In the first instance, it is important to understand how migration intensities vary between ethnic groups at the national level and to identify the magnitude and patterns of ethnic migration taking place at a macro scale (nationally and between regions). The district scale is particularly important for administrative and policy-making activity and therefore, measures of connectivity and effectiveness will be used to provide new insights into spatial and ethnic variations in movement intensities in 1991 and 2001 as well as providing a framework from which to select districts for more detailed analysis at local level.  Given that London is the major location for ethnic minority populations in Britain and is also the hub of the white British internal migration system, we undertake more detailed analysis of the ethnic group flows taking place within the capital city, paying particular attention to the socio-economic characteristics of the origins and destinations at borough and ward level. However, given the particular concentrations of ethnic minorities in other provincial cities, we also propose to use ward data to examine whether patterns of migration in London are replicated elsewhere and offer answers to questions as to whether internal migration of ethnic minorities in provincial cities is following deconcentration patterns similar to those of whites or whether migration patterns are concentration.

The project will address these questions primarily using data from the 2001 and 1991 Special Migration Statistics for regions and districts across the UK with more detailed analysis undertaken using London boroughs and wards in London and selected provincial cities. 2001 Census microdata will also be used where appropriate. As the spatial units reduce in size, more attention will be paid to processes and to the use of data from other sources to understand the composition of the communities in more detail.
